Anniv. ~ SCOTUS Response to LWVNC Partisan Gerrymandering Case Appeal
About this event
SUPREME COURT DECLINES TO SET A STANDARD TO REIN IN PARTISAN GERRYMANDERING
Voters and other plaintiffs in North Carolina and Maryland filed suits challenging their States’ congressional districting maps as unconstitutional partisan gerrymanders. The case was appealed to the US Supreme Court.
On June 27, 2019 the Court held that partisan gerrymandering was a nonjusticiable political question. This result bars partisan gerrymandering claims from being brought in federal court, meaning that partisan gerrymandering claims must be litigated in state courts.
