The League of Women Voters of Deschutes County (LWVDC) Y-Essay Team is proud to announce 3 winners of our 2nd Annual Y-Essay Contest. Miranda Vogel and Aria Levinson, both of Caldera High School and Evonna West of Ridgeview High School each won a $500 cash prize. Each essayist was also presented with an awards certificate honoring their achievement. We hope that the winners and their peers will take advantage of the complimentary student membership with LWVDC to encourage their continued participation in civics. Become a Student Member by clicking on the blue JOIN US button at the top of our website home page.
The contest invited senior students to submit an original essay that answered the question “Why Vote?” Essays were blind judged by a dozen Deschutes County community members, including elected officials, members of the media, and educators. Each essay was judged using an online rubric and scoring tool created by the LWVDC Y-Essay Contest team.
The LWVDC would like to thank the work of the volunteer judges, those who donated to the Y-Essay contest prize fund, and 16 schools in Deschutes County for participating. LWVDC looks forward to conducting the Third Annual Y-Essay contest to engage youth by letting them know that their voices are an important part of the democratic process.
