The League of Women Voters of Deschutes County uses funds for carrying out our community activities. Our members are volunteers and donations go directly to supporting league causes, voter outreach and education, producing candidate and ballot measure forums and advertising.

The League works tirelessly to create an environment where every citizen has the DESIRE, the RIGHT, the KNOWLEDGE, and the CONFIDENCE to participate in our democracy.

Currently, we are working on a campaign to reach underrepresented voters in Deschutes County. These include our youth, the Latino Community, and the unaffiliated voters (those with no party chosen).

Your tax-deductible donation to the Get Out the Vote Fund will help us greatly in reaching and educating these voters so they have the knowledge and the desire to vote in the upcoming, crucial elections.

The League of Women Voters, Deschutes County (LWVDC) believes students are the best advocates to increase the voting turnout in their age group. To encourage that advocacy, LWVDC sponsors an annual student essay contest: Y-Essay! The subject of the essay is “Why Vote?” (The ‘Y’ is for Yes, Youth, and Why?) The contest is open to high school seniors in Deschutes County. The winning essayists will each receive an award of $500. The award for the winning essay(s) comes from the donation fund dedicated to the Y-Essay Contest. The number of winners depends not only on the judging criteria but also on the amount of money we have in the donation fund.

 Once a month (except July and August) The League of Women Voters of Deschutes County hosts a public meeting on the first Thursday of the month. The First Thursday Chair, Board, and members keep abreast of current hot topics in Central Oregon and invite local experts to be our host speakers.

All events are free and open to the public and we encourage nonmembers to join us for an always interesting presentation and opportunity to socialize.

Since our inception, the League of Women Voters fought for voter access and participation and worked to ensure historically underrepresented communities’ voices are welcomed and heard throughout our democracy – all while maintaining our commitment to nonpartisanship and fostering an informed electorate. The leaders we elect make decisions that affect our daily lives. Elections are our chance to stand up for what matters most to us and to have an impact on the issues that affect us, our communities, our families and our future. We make voting easier through varied voter education programs.

The League of Women Voters of Deschutes County strives to include everyone who wishes to join us. Although we do offer scholarships for those that may not be able to afford the dues payment, we know that many people would like to help increase our membership. If you would like to donate to the Gift Membership fund, it will help in that effort. The money will be used exclusively to gift an annual membership to someone in our community that would like to join. The only criteria to receive these gifts is that the recipient becomes actively involved in a committee, serves on the board, or volunteers in some other meaningful way.
