Freedom Readers Book Club

Freedom Readers Book Club is a relaxed group that is open to anyone interested in our mission: To read and discuss books that will give us a better understanding and appreciation of our democracy. Membership in the League is not a Requirement to join the book club, and you are welcome to joint us for a discussion even if you haven't finished reading the book!

We have about 30 members on our roster, with 10-12 in attendance for any given discussion. Several in our group choose to remain on the roster just to keep track of what we are reading. Meetings are being held on Zoom during the pandemic and we follow COVID guidelines. In normal times, we meet at a member’s home or other location, such as a public park, in the evening on the 3rd Thursday of each month (except August).

We democratically select books (by vote) two months in advance of the discussion. They include such titles as The Woman’s Hour: The Great Fight for the Vote, by Elaine Weiss; Red Notice: A True Story of High Finance, Murder, and One Man’s Fight for Justice, by Bill Browder; The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl, by Timothy Egan; and 21 Lessons for the 21st Century, by Yuval Harari.

To join a Freedom Readers meeting, to find out what we are reading this month, or just to inquire or comment on books, check out the Events Calander page or email info@lwvdeschutes.org.
