Central Oregon Womxm’s March
January 18 @ 10:30 am - 1:00 pm
Encouraging LWV of Deschutes members to show support and allyship!
The march this year spotlights women of color: black, Indigenous, Latinx, and also Queer and transwomen, who are among the most vulnerable members of our community. Let’s march to highlight the accomplishments of these women and the barriers they’ve faced within our local community.
League members, let’s march together! We will also provide voter registration, we need volunteers! Contact Geri at LWVDC info for details. Please leave your pink hats at home! That is not this year’s focus!
With the slogan “Reclaiming Power,” the March will uphold the rights of vulnerable people who identify as women as well as LGBTQ people, said organizers.
This year, organizers have moved the event from Bend to Centennial Park in Redmond, a community in which at least 13 percent of residents are Latinx. They hope to attract supporters from Bend, Madras, and surrounding communities. Centennial Park is located at SW 7th Street and Evergreen Avenue in Redmond. Details on the Central Oregon Women’s March Facebook page.
The event will include performances by singer-songwriter Shireen Amini and others. In addition, there will be interactive salons that present Oregon’s history of racism, provide the opportunity for voter registration sponsored by the League of Women Voters, and introduce participants to Oregon’s current and former leaders who are people of color.
We can march because of the civil rights movement and all of the Black women like Coretta Scott King, Claudette Colven, Ella Baker, Fanny Lou Hammer and Rosa Parks who led that struggle and provided the foundation for the nonviolent work we do today, this will be a family-friendly event..
The Central Oregon Women’s March is co-sponsored by the Latino Community Association, Neighbors for Redmond, Embrace Bend, Indivisible Bend, Vocal Seniority, World Muse, Hola!, Democratic Socialists of America, and the League of Women Voters.
